Wigan Athletic Biography

English Professional football club Wigan Athletic F.C was formed in 1932 and based in Wigan, Greater Manchester. The club soon became professional and there major win came when they beat Carlisle United 6-1 in the first round of the FA Cup. In the 1953-54 season, Wigan played an FA Cup match against Hereford United in front of a crowd of 27,526, a Wigan Athletic record and also a record for a match between two non-league teams at a non-league ground.

Wigan became founder members of the Northern Premier League after numerous attempts to gain election to the Scottish League Second Division were unsuccessful. However, Wigan finally received election to the Football League in 1978 and started successfully finishing sixth in the League and earning promotion only two years later.

The club won its first silverware as a League club in 1985, winning the Freight Rover Trophy but they were beaten in the Northern Final the next season by Bolton Wanderers. In start of the 90s the club suffered as t hey had a worst ever league season. In 1995 local millionaire David Whelan purchased the club, when they were playing in the Third Division. In 1997 he won the Third Division title under the management of John Deeha.

Numbers of players were brought into the side and hey fail to win their first match in Premier League against Chelsea. Since then club has been in the Premier League and forming quite well.
